Illustration

I create editorial and narrative illustrations that give clear visual form to a text, idea or story.

What kinds of project can illustration serve?

I work for newspapers, magazines, publishers and businesses. An image can accompany an article, open a feature, give a story a face or make a complex subject more immediate without reducing its nuance.

A commission can involve one image, a cover or a series for several pages and formats. Within a series, I build continuity through composition, colour and character so that the images relate to one another while each retains its purpose.

My portfolio brings together narrative images, living subjects, still lifes and observational studies. You can see them on the Work page.

How does an illustration take shape?

I begin by understanding the text, its reader and the precise role of the image. I then research the angle, references and composition. Early sketches help us decide what should be shown, suggested or left to the words.

Once the direction is approved, I refine the drawing, light, material and colour. For a series, these decisions form a shared framework. Our exchanges stay focused on concrete choices so the image can progress efficiently into the formats required for publication.

What do traditional media change?

Gouache, watercolour, charcoal and ink give line and surface a variation that is difficult to obtain through a uniform process. I rely on observational drawing to understand forms before stylising them.

I then finish digitally when the project requires it: adjusting values, composing, vectorising or preparing files. This combination retains the presence of the material while meeting the precise constraints of publishing and communication.

How can you commission an illustration?

Tell me about the subject, publication context, required formats and schedule. I can then propose a way of working suited to one image or a series.
