Brand identity

I build brand identities through observation and drawing, then make them precise and usable across their different applications.

What is a hand-drawn brand identity?

A brand identity needs to be recognisable, coherent and suited to its uses. Drawing can root that identity in something real: a place, gesture, object, activity or material that belongs to the project.

I use this material to develop a mark, typographic composition, colours and a system of applications. The result may remain visibly drawn or become restrained and vector-based. In both cases, its form grows from precise observation rather than a catalogue of generic symbols.

This approach suits businesses and projects that need a distinctive image capable of remaining clear across printed and digital media.

How is the visual system built?

We begin by clarifying the activity, audience, applications and elements that genuinely belong to the brand. I gather useful references, observe the subject and develop several formal directions. Our exchanges compare those directions through concrete criteria.

The chosen direction is then refined: drawing, mark, typography, colour, composition and behaviour across the required media. I finish the elements in formats suited to their use and organise the system so it can be applied consistently.

The Method page explains this progression from observation to a clear visual form.

What does the Real French project show?

For Real French, the identity and communication materials developed from drawing the place through to printed applications. The place provided the starting material; the drawing was then simplified and organised into a usable system.

The project shows the transition between complete observation and a precise application without adding a form foreign to the subject. It illustrates how I connect drawing, composition and production.

How can you introduce an identity project?

Describe the activity, priority applications, what already exists and what the new identity needs to make recognisable. I can reply with an initial reading of the project and the useful next steps.
